Anyone who experiences a Hästens topper in the store is usually quickly sold: it lies wonderfully! But over time, the topper can harden. You prevent this by airing, drying, massaging and rolling the topper daily. If you don't, the horsehair filling will be squashed. The result is a hard topper that also ventilates less well. With that, the sublime qualities of your luxurious top-deck mattress (and of your bed) are largely gone. The royal Harrison Spinks developed a new concept topper with extremely thin steel pocket springs that would provide the same comfort. But with no necessary maintenance. Can it compete with the traditional Hästens topper?
A topper or top deck mattress made of natural materials with a horsehair core has pleasant properties. It is super comfortable and ventilates well. This certainly applies to the Hästens topper. Horsehair has high resilience, absorbs a lot of moisture and ventilates well due to its hollow core. This makes for a very pleasant bed climate, especially for people who perspire a lot during sleep. But a topper made of horsehair does require daily maintenance: airing, drying, massaging and rolling up. Quite an intensive job. If you don't do that, the topper quickly loses its shape and elasticity. The horsehair is crushed and loses its hollow ventilating core. Also, the pores of all the processed natural materials then clog up. As a result, the comfort of this beautiful Hästens topper disappears far too quickly.
A thin top-deck mattress with pocket springs gives one pause for thought: is it possible? Won't you feel the springs poking into your back? Unfortunately, with existing toppers you do feel them and that is not comfortable. The Research Department of Harrison Spinks (known from the British Queens Award) developed a new version with Microcoils. The innovation is in ultra-thin micro pocket springs in ventilated cotton pouches, which can indent ten 10 cm and thus guarantee a lot of ventilation (pump effect). These highly refined springs made of high-quality steel require a special production technique and can only be turned by Harisson Spinks himself. In a mattress of 180 by 200 cm there are 4500 (!) of these micro coils. On top of the pocket spring layer are natural materials such as Alpaca wool and silk. Like Hästens', the topper lies comfortably and we did not feel the micro pocket springs after extensive testing. The big advantage is that no maintenance is required. Only turning the topper every now and then is sufficient.
Is the long tradition of horsehair, known for its open structure, moisture absorption and resilience now being broken? If you massage, dry and roll the Hästens topper daily, you are sure to enjoy it for a long time. If you don't (that unfortunately applies to most people), be sure to check out the new topper from Harrison Spinks. The lying comfort is at the same very high level, but this topper works for you instead of the other way around and, according to Harrison Spinks, will continue to do so for years to come. For people who own a Hästens bed but want to replace their topper, Harrison Spinks' topper is definitely an interesting option.
