A mattress topper changes the firmness of your mattress by adding an extra layer of comfort and support. Depending on the material, a topper can make your mattress softer (memory foam, down) or provide more support (latex, spring core). The thickness and density of the topper determine how much it affects the original feel of your mattress.

How exactly does a mattress topper affect the firmness of your mattress?

A mattress topper acts as an additional layer of comfort that can alter the original feel of your mattress. By placing the topper between you and your mattress, you can instantly change how firm or soft your bed feels.

The material of the mattress topper plays a key role here. Memory foam toppers add a soft, contouring layer that reduces pressure points. Latex toppers offer more bounce and support, while spring core toppers can add extra firmness to a mattress that is too soft.

The thickness of your mattress topper determines how much of an impact it has. A thin topper (3–5 cm) subtly adjusts the feel of your bed, while a thick topper (7–10 cm) can significantly alter the character of your mattress. This allows you to give an old or overly firm mattress a new lease on life without having to buy a new one right away.

Does a mattress topper make your mattress softer or firmer?

This depends entirely on the mattress topper material you choose. Different materials have opposite effects on the firmness of your sleeping surface.

Memory foam and gel toppers make your mattress softer by conforming to the contours of your body. These materials absorb motion and create a soft, enveloping feel. Down-alternative toppers also add softness, but remain more breathable than memory foam.

Latex mattress toppers offer a balance between comfort and support. They add softness while maintaining responsiveness, so you don’t sink in. Spring mattress toppers, on the other hand, make your mattress firmer by adding extra support and resilience.

Material Effect on firmness   Features
Memory foam Softer Enveloping, pressure-relieving
Latex Balanced Supportive, responsive
Feather score More solid Extra support, resilient
Down alternative.   Softer Fluffy, breathable

How do you choose the right mattress topper for your preferred level of firmness?

Choosing the right mattress topper starts with evaluating your current mattress and identifying what you want to improve. If your mattress feels too firm, look for materials that add softness. If your mattress is too soft, you need more support.

Your sleeping position also plays a role. Side sleepers often benefit from soft mattress toppers that relieve pressure points on the hips and shoulders. Stomach and back sleepers usually need more support to maintain the natural curve of the spine.

Also consider practical factors. If you tend to get hot while sleeping, opt for natural latex or gel toppers, which are more breathable than memory foam.

  • Mattress too firm: choose natural latex
  • Mattress too soft: choose natural latex
  • If you tend to get hot while sleeping: avoid memory foam; choose natural latex
  • Pressure points: memory foam or soft natural latex

When is a mattress topper the best solution for mattress problems?

A mattress topper works best as a temporary solution or when your mattress is still structurally sound but you want to adjust the level of comfort. If your mattress has sagged, has indentations, or the springs are noticeable, a mattress topper won’t solve these problems.

Ideal situations for a mattress topper include: a new mattress that’s too firm and needs to be softened, a guest room that needs to be made more comfortable, or when your partner prefers a different level of firmness. A mattress topper can also provide temporary relief for back pain while you look for a permanent solution.

A new mattress is a better option if your current mattress is more than 8–10 years old, has visible sagging, or if you regularly wake up with pain. In these cases, a mattress topper only masks the symptoms without addressing the underlying problem.

Also consider the cost. A high-quality mattress topper costs between 1,000 and 2,000 euros (for a double bed), whereas a new mattress is a long-term investment that will last 10 to 15 years.

Key points about mattress toppers and firmness

A mattress topper can significantly affect the firmness of your mattress, but the right choice depends on your specific situation. The type of material and thickness determine whether your mattress will feel softer or firmer.

Memory foam and down alternatives provide softness, latex offers balance, and spring core adds firmness. A mattress topper that is 5–7 cm thick usually provides the best results without significantly affecting the original mattress support.

Use a mattress topper as a temporary solution or to fine-tune your comfort. For structural mattress issues, such as sagging, a new mattress is the better investment. Always test different materials before making a choice, as personal preferences vary greatly.

Which bed size suits your height?

Top service!

About four years ago, I bought a beautiful bed at Broring, Gelderlandplein. Stephan helped me.
I lived nearby.
Now that I've moved in with my partner and live in Bloemendaal, I was having problems with the bed's controls.
My boyfriend contacted Broring about this many times by phone and email. When that didn't work, Stephan came by to fix it!
We thought that was great service because I no longer live in Buitenveldert, so I'm not next door!
I was also helped in the store by a somewhat older person, blond/gray hair, glasses, who was always very friendly!
The quality of the items, including sheets, towels, etc. in the store is also very good.
