The decision to switch to a summer comforter depends on the outside temperature, your bedroom, and how warm you feel. Generally, it’s best to make the switch in April or May, when the nights start to get warmer and you begin to feel too hot under your winter comforter. A lightweight comforter provides better temperature regulation during warm nights and significantly improves your sleep comfort.

What is the difference between a summer comforter and a winter comforter?

A summer comforter has a lighter filling and a thinner construction than a winter comforter, which means it retains less heat. Winter comforters contain more insulating material to keep you warm on cold nights, while summer comforters are designed for optimal airflow and cooling.

The filling is the main difference between seasonal duvets. Winter duvets often use thicker layers of down, feathers, or synthetic fibers that trap heat. Summer duvets, on the other hand, contain less filling or use breathable materials such as bamboo, linen, or specially developed cooling fibers.

The material of the outer fabric also plays an important role. Summer bedding often uses natural fibers such as cotton, linen, or bamboo, which wick away moisture and allow air to circulate. These materials feel cooler against the skin and prevent overheating during warm nights.

The construction also varies by season. Summer comforters often feature simpler quilting or fewer compartments, allowing air to circulate more freely. This ensures better temperature regulation and prevents heat from building up under the comforter.

When is it time to switch to a summer comforter?

Switch to a summer comforter when nighttime temperatures rise above 15°C and you regularly wake up because of the heat. This usually happens between April and May, depending on the climate and your personal temperature regulation. Look out for signs such as sweating, restless sleep, or kicking off your comforter.

The temperature in your bedroom is the best indicator of when to switch. A bedroom temperature between 16 and 19°C is ideal for optimal sleep comfort. If this temperature consistently rises above 18°C at night, you’ll benefit from a lighter comforter that provides better cooling.

Personal comfort factors also determine the right time to switch duvets. People who tend to sleep warmly may switch sooner than those who feel the cold easily. Pay attention to your sleep quality: if you wake up more often or have trouble sleeping because of the heat, it’s time for a summer duvet.

Seasonal indicators can help you time your transition. When you’re wearing lighter clothing during the day and can leave the windows open, that’s usually a good time to switch to your seasonal comforter. Nature often provides the best cues for comfort at home.

How do you choose the right summer comforter for your sleeping style?

Choose a summer comforter based on your body temperature, sleeping position, and material preferences. People who tend to run hot will benefit from ultra-light comforters with cooling properties, while those who feel the cold easily may prefer a medium-weight comforter. Also look for breathable materials that wick away moisture and provide comfort.

Your sleeping position influences your choice of the right lightweight comforter. Side sleepers often need more coverage and may benefit from a slightly larger size. Stomach sleepers, on the other hand, usually benefit from an extra-lightweight comforter, as they naturally run warmer due to their sleeping position.

Fabric choice plays a crucial role in sleep comfort during the summer. Natural fabrics such as cotton, linen, and bamboo offer excellent breathability. Synthetic fabrics can also be effective, especially modern microfiber that has been specifically designed for temperature regulation.

Allergy-friendly options are important for sensitive sleepers. Hypoallergenic fillings, such as synthetic fibers or specially treated natural materials, ensure comfortable nights without irritation. These materials are also often easier to care for and wash.

The size of your summer comforter should match your bed and sleeping habits. A comforter that’s too small can leave you feeling cold in certain spots, while one that’s too large can trap heat. Choose the right size for optimal sleep comfort on warm nights.

Which materials provide the best cooling on hot nights?

Natural fibers such as linen, bamboo, and percale cotton provide the best cooling for hot nights. These materials have excellent moisture-wicking properties and allow air to circulate freely. Modern synthetic materials with cooling technology can also provide effective temperature regulation for a comfortable night’s sleep in the summer.

Linen is known as one of the best materials for warm nights. Its loose weave allows for maximum airflow, while the fabric quickly absorbs and wicks away moisture. Linen feels naturally cool against the skin and becomes even cooler the more it is washed.

Bamboo fibers have natural temperature-regulating properties that make them ideal for summer sleep. The material is naturally antibacterial and hypoallergenic, while also providing excellent moisture-wicking properties. Bamboo duvets stay comfortably dry, even on hot and humid nights.

Percale cotton offers a crisp, cool feel that’s perfect for those who tend to get hot while sleeping. Its simple weave allows for good airflow, and the fabric feels refreshing against the skin. Percale is durable and gets cooler with every wash.

Modern synthetic materials utilize innovative cooling technologies. Microfiber with cooling gel, phase-change materials, and specially developed polyester can provide effective temperature regulation. These materials are often easy to care for and retain their cooling properties even after many washes.

Combining different materials can yield optimal results. For example, a duvet with bamboo filling and a percale cotton outer fabric combines the benefits of both materials for maximum sleep comfort in the summer.

Which bed size suits your height?

Top service!

About four years ago, I bought a beautiful bed at Broring, Gelderlandplein. Stephan helped me.
I lived nearby.
Now that I've moved in with my partner and live in Bloemendaal, I was having problems with the bed's controls.
My boyfriend contacted Broring about this many times by phone and email. When that didn't work, Stephan came by to fix it!
We thought that was great service because I no longer live in Buitenveldert, so I'm not next door!
I was also helped in the store by a somewhat older person, blond/gray hair, glasses, who was always very friendly!
The quality of the items, including sheets, towels, etc. in the store is also very good.
