You can prevent a shifting mattress on your box spring by using non-slip mats, checking proper mattress sizes, or placing grip pads between mattress and box spring. The problem usually arises from slippery surfaces, wrong sizes or wear and tear of materials. With the right solution, you can enjoy a stable bed again without nighttime annoyances.

Why does your mattress shift on the box spring?

Mattress slippage is usually caused by a lack of grip between the surfaces. Modern box springs often have a smooth top surface, while mattresses are increasingly being finished with a smooth underside as well. This combination prevents any natural friction from occurring. At Bröring, we have box springs in our collection with an anti-slip layer on the top. This effectively solves the problem. In addition, we can supply box springs with brackets at the foot end and, if desired, on the sides, so that the mattress always stays securely in place.

Material differences also play a role. A box spring with a fabric covering holds a mattress better than one with a smooth, synthetic finish. The weight of the mattress also matters: lighter mattresses shift faster than heavier ones.

Wrong dimensions are another common cause. If your mattress is slightly too small for your box spring, it has more room to move. Even a difference of a few inches can cause shifting, especially if you move around a lot at night.

Material wear and tear exacerbates the problem. Over time, surfaces become smoother, and the natural grip between the mattress and the box spring diminishes further.

What simple solutions can you try yourself?

The most effective DIY solution is to use anti-slip mats. You place these rubber or silicone mats between the box spring and mattress. They provide grip on both sides and effectively prevent shifting.

Grip pads are a cheaper alternative. You place these small, round discs of non-skid material at strategic points under your mattress. Four to six pads are usually enough for a double bed.

Double-sided tape also works, but is less durable. Stick strips of tape on the top of your box spring before placing the mattress. Be aware that some tapes leave adhesive residue.

Always check that your mattress is the right size first. Measure both your box spring and mattress. Even small differences can cause shifting. A mattress that fits precisely is less likely to shift.

A simple trick is to use a fitted sheet with deep corners. These keep the mattress more securely in place thanks to the extra tension they create.

How to choose the right anti-slip solution?

For different types of box springs and mattresses, different non-slip solutions work best. A full anti-slip mat is ideal for slippery box springs and lightweight mattresses. These mats are available in different thicknesses and materials.

Silicone grip pads work extremely well on fabric box springs. They adhere well to fabric and leave no residue. For leather box springs, rubber pads are a better choice because silicone has less grip on leather.

Boxspring type Best non-slip solution Advantages
Smooth fabric Full non-slip mat Maximum grip, durable
Textile upholstery Silicone grip pads Good adhesion, no residue
Leather finishing Rubber pads Strong grip on leather
Synthetic materials Combined solution Customization per situation

When making your choice, also consider the thickness of the non-slip material. Mats that are too thick can affect lying comfort and change the feel of your mattress. Thin solutions of 2-3 millimeters are usually sufficient.

Always choose breathable materials. Anti-slip solutions that impede ventilation can cause moisture problems. Perforated mats or pads with vents are therefore recommended.

When is it time for professional advice?

If simple anti-slip solutions do not help, the problem may lie deeper. A mattress that keeps shifting despite all measures may indicate the wrong combination of mattress and box spring.

Signs that you need professional advice include: continuous shifting despite anti-slip measures, uncomfortable sleeping due to instability, or visible wear and tear on mattress or box spring due to shifting.

Also, if you regularly experience back pain or sleep problems, the shifting of your mattress may be a symptom of a larger problem. A mattress that does not properly fit your box spring may not provide adequate support.

Professional sleep specialists can assess whether your current combination is optimal. Sometimes replacing just the mattress or just the box spring is sufficient. In other cases, a completely new sleep system is the best solution.

Consider professional advice especially if your bed is older than 8-10 years. Materials wear out and what used to work well may no longer fit your current sleep needs.

A shifting mattress doesn't have to be a permanent problem. With the right approach, you can quickly find a solution that suits your situation. Should you still have trouble after trying these tips, we at Bröring are ready to help you with personal advice. Our specialists will be happy to help you find the best solution for your sleeping comfort.

Luxurious modern bedroom with a box spring bed

Top service!

About four years ago, I bought a beautiful bed at Broring, Gelderlandplein. Stephan helped me.
I lived nearby.
Now that I've moved in with my partner and live in Bloemendaal, I was having problems with the bed's controls.
My boyfriend contacted Broring about this many times by phone and email. When that didn't work, Stephan came by to fix it!
We thought that was great service because I no longer live in Buitenveldert, so I'm not next door!
I was also helped in the store by a somewhat older person, blond/gray hair, glasses, who was always very friendly!
The quality of the items, including sheets, towels, etc. in the store is also very good.
