The ventilation in a high-quality box spring is provided by natural airflow created by the open structure of pocket springs and breathable materials. Movement during sleep creates a pumping effect that circulates air through the various layers. This helps regulate moisture and temperature and prevents the buildup of heat and moisture in your bed.

Why ventilation in your box spring is so important

The ventilation in your box spring plays a major role in determining how comfortably you sleep. A well-ventilated bed regulates temperature and moisture, keeping your body at a comfortable temperature all night long.

When you sleep, your body loses moisture through perspiration. This moisture has to go somewhere, and without proper ventilation, it gets trapped in your mattress and box spring. The result? You wake up in a damp bed, which significantly disrupts your sleep quality.

Poor ventilation also leads to hygiene issues. Moisture and heat create the perfect conditions for bacteria, mold, and dust mites. This can result in unpleasant odors and even health problems, especially if you’re prone to allergies.

After personal issues, an unhealthy sleeping environment is known to be the biggest disruptor of your sleep. That’s why good ventilation isn’t just pleasant—it’s essential for healthy sleep.

For those looking for an active solution, Freshbed is a great option.

FreshBed is a revolutionary sleep system that precisely regulates the climate in your sleeping environment. It provides a personalized, thermally regulated microclimate with individual temperature settings, quiet, active, feather-light ventilation, and air purification via a medical-grade HEPA filter. Combined with the handmade Swiss FreshBed mattress, featuring a unique layered structure and 7-zone smart pockets, FreshBed proves to be a life-changing experience.

How exactly does the ventilation system in a box spring work?

The ventilation in a box spring is based on natural air circulation created by your movements while you sleep. Every time you move, the springs act like tiny pumps that push air through the bed.

The bottom layer of your box spring typically contains Bonell springs or pocket springs, which have an open structure. These springs allow air to circulate freely between the coils. Above that is often a layer of natural materials such as coconut fiber, latex, or breathable foam.

When you lie on the bed and move, the springs compress and then expand again. This pumping action draws in fresh air and pushes out warm, humid air. The air flows from the bottom to the top through all the layers.

The sides of the box spring also play a role. Many high-quality box springs feature ventilated side panels or breathable fabrics that promote air circulation. This creates a continuous flow of air that keeps your bed fresh and dry.

What makes a box spring breathable?

The breathability of a box spring depends on the choice of materials and its construction. Pocket springs are the clear winner in this regard because each spring is enclosed in its own breathable cotton pocket.

Natural materials such as latex, coconut fiber, horsehair, and organic cotton have an inherently open structure. These materials absorb moisture and release it back into the environment. Synthetic foams can also provide good ventilation, provided they are equipped with ventilation pores.

Material Ventilation feature   Advantage
Pocket springs Excellent Pump effect + open structure
Natural latex Very good Natural pores
Coconut fibers Good Open fiber structure
Bonell springs Good Large open spaces
Open-cell foam   Fair to good Artificial ventilation pores

The construction is also important. Tufted mattresses, in which the layers are held together by threads rather than glue, provide better ventilation. Side stitching along the edges prevents ventilation from being obstructed by sewn-shut sides.

How can you tell if your box spring is well-ventilated?

You usually notice poor ventilation in the morning when you wake up. A clammy feeling in bed or damp sheets are clear signs that your box spring isn’t breathing properly.

Watch out for these warning signs:

  • You wake up feeling hot and sweaty, even at a normal room temperature
  • Your sheets feel damp, especially around your body
  • There's a musty smell around your bed
  • You have a stuffy nose or sneezing fits in bed
  • The bed still feels warm after a night's sleep

A simple test is the palm experiment. Place your hand flat on different parts of your mattress after getting out of bed. If it feels warm and damp, your bed is retaining too much heat and moisture.

With a well-ventilated mattress, you’ll wake up to a fresh, dry surface. You’ll wake up feeling rested, without that sticky feeling on your skin.

What can you do to improve ventilation in your box spring?

The placement of your bed has a major impact on ventilation. Make sure there is at least 10 centimeters of space around your bed so that air can circulate freely. Do not place your bed directly against an exterior wall or under a window where condensation can form.

Regular maintenance makes a huge difference. Flip your mattress every three months and rotate it so the head and foot ends switch places. This prevents moisture from building up in one spot. Vacuum your mattress monthly to remove dust and skin flakes that can block airflow.

Your bedding also plays a role. Choose breathable materials such as cotton, bamboo, or linen. Synthetic fabrics trap heat and moisture. Use a mattress protector that is water-repellent but breathable.

Ventilate your bedroom daily by opening the windows. The ideal humidity level is between 40% and 60%. Excessive humidity puts extra strain on your bedding.

If your current bed doesn't breathe well, consider a mattress topper with breathable properties. Mattress toppers with micro-pocket springs or natural materials can significantly improve ventilation without requiring you to buy a whole new bed.

Top service!

About four years ago, I bought a beautiful bed at Broring, Gelderlandplein. Stephan helped me.
I lived nearby.
Now that I've moved in with my partner and live in Bloemendaal, I was having problems with the bed's controls.
My boyfriend contacted Broring about this many times by phone and email. When that didn't work, Stephan came by to fix it!
We thought that was great service because I no longer live in Buitenveldert, so I'm not next door!
I was also helped in the store by a somewhat older person, blond/gray hair, glasses, who was always very friendly!
The quality of the items, including sheets, towels, etc. in the store is also very good.
