Top service!

About four years ago, I bought a beautiful bed at Broring, Gelderlandplein. Stephan helped me.
I lived nearby.
Now that I've moved in with my partner and live in Bloemendaal, I was having problems with the bed's controls.
My boyfriend contacted Broring about this many times by phone and email. When that didn't work, Stephan came by to fix it!
We thought that was great service because I no longer live in Buitenveldert, so I'm not next door!
I was also helped in the store by a somewhat older person, blond/gray hair, glasses, who was always very friendly!
The quality of the items, including sheets, towels, etc. in the store is also very good.

When it comes to back comfort, choosing between a box spring or slatted base does make a difference. A box spring offers more resilience and absorbs movement better, while a slatted base provides more direct support and better ventilation. The best choice depends on your sleeping position, weight, and any back problems you may have. Both systems can be good for your back, provided you combine them with the right mattress.

What is the difference between a box spring and a slatted base for your back?

A box spring acts like a large spring under your mattress. It consists of a wooden frame containing springs that move with your body. This provides soft, resilient support that is ideal if you like to sleep on your side or if your joints have become a little stiffer.

A slatted base, on the other hand, has wooden slats that support your body more directly. These slats can often be adjusted in hardness, allowing you to determine exactly how much support your back receives. This system also ventilates better because there is more space for air circulation.

For your back, this difference means that a box spring provides more freedom of movement and reduces pressure points, while a slatted base offers more control over the support your spine receives. Both can work very well, but they feel very different.

What back problems can you get from an unsuitable bed?

The wrong bed can cause various back problems that can really ruin your day. The most common complaints are lower back pain, neck pain, and stiffness in your joints when you wake up in the morning.

If your bed is too soft, your body sinks in too far and your spine takes on an unnatural curve. This can lead to:

  • Chronic lower back pain
  • Muscle tension in your neck and shoulders
  • Stiffness in your joints
  • Poor sleep due to uncomfortable positions

A bed that is too hard can also cause problems. Your hips and shoulders will not have enough space to sink in, creating pressure points. This can cause painful joints and tense muscles.

How do you choose between a box spring and a slatted base if you have back pain?

If you already suffer from back pain, there are a few practical criteria that can help you make your choice. Your sleeping position plays an important role in this.

Choose a box spring if you:

  • Sleeping mainly on your side
  • Have sensitive joints
  • Prefers a softer, more resilient surface
  • Having a partner who moves around a lot during sleep

Opt for a slatted base if you:

  • Sleeping on your back or stomach
  • Suffer from excessive perspiration
  • Be able to precisely adjust how firm or soft your bed is
  • Need more direct back support

Your body weight also plays a role. Heavier people often benefit more from the firmer support of a slatted base, while lighter people feel more comfortable on a box spring.

Why is the combination of bed and mattress so important for your back?

Your bed and mattress work together as a single support system. It makes little sense to look only at your mattress without considering what lies beneath it. A soft mattress on a hard slatted base feels very different from the same mattress on a resilient box spring.

With a pocket spring mattress, for example, where each spring responds individually to pressure, the base makes the difference between optimal support and a bed that doesn't feel right. The springs in your mattress and the support underneath must work together to keep your spine in the correct position.

A good combination ensures that:

  • Your body sags in the right places
  • Your spine retains a natural S-shape
  • Pressure points are avoided
  • Your muscles can relax during sleep.

The best choice for your back comfort

The perfect choice between a box spring and a slatted base is very personal. What works fantastically for one person may be completely wrong for another. The most important thing is to try it out before you buy it.

Take the time to try out different combinations. Pay attention to how your body reacts: do you feel comfortable right away, or do you have to search for a good position? A good bed feels natural from the very first moment.

Consider the long term as well. A high-quality bed, whether it is a box spring or slatted base, will last for years. Investing in the right support for your back will pay off in better sleep and less pain.

At Bröring, we are happy to help you find the perfect combination that suits your body and sleeping preferences. Our sleep specialists have the experience to work with you to discover what works best for your back comfort.
