For most people, the ideal thickness for a mattress topper is between 5 and 7 centimeters. This thickness provides sufficient softness and pressure relief without compromising the supportive qualities of your firm mattress. Thinner toppers, measuring 2–4 cm, work well for minor adjustments, while thicker options, measuring 8–10 cm, are suitable for those seeking greater comfort.

Why use a mattress topper on a firm mattress?

A mattress topper on a firm mattress gives you the best of both worlds: the firm support your spine needs, combined with a soft top layer for comfort. Many people deliberately choose a firm mattress for its orthopedic benefits, but find that this comes at the expense of sleep comfort.

A mattress topper elegantly solves this problem. You retain the firm foundation that’s essential for good posture while sleeping, while the topper provides pressure relief at sensitive points like the hips and shoulders. This prevents you from waking up at night due to uncomfortable pressure points.

The main advantage is that you don’t have to replace your existing mattress. A good mattress topper can transform a hard mattress from uncomfortable to comfortable, without the investment in an entirely new sleep system. Plus, you can easily replace the topper if your preferences change. However, in the case of a worn-out or sagging mattress, a topper is often not a sustainable solution; the underlying problems remain and can still negatively affect your comfort. That’s why, in such situations, we recommend replacing the mattress itself instead.

What thickness of mattress topper do you need for optimal comfort?

The right thickness depends on how much softness you want to add and how firm your current mattress feels. A thickness of 5–7 centimeters works perfectly for most situations and offers a good balance between comfort and support.

Topper pads measuring 2–4 centimeters are perfect if you’re just looking for a little extra softness. These thin options retain almost all of your mattress’s firmness while taking away just enough of the harshness that causes discomfort. They’re also ideal if you’re used to sleeping on a firm surface but want a little extra comfort now and then.

For a softer feel, choose a thickness of 5–7 centimeters. This thickness makes a noticeable difference in comfort without making you feel like you’re sinking in. Your mattress still feels firm, but the top layer provides pleasant pressure relief.

Toppers measuring 8–10 centimeters are the thickest option and create an almost entirely new sleeping experience. They’re a good choice if your mattress is very firm or if you suffer from pressure points. Keep in mind that very thick toppers can reduce the supportive properties of your firm mattress.

How do you choose the right material for your mattress topper?

The material of your mattress topper affects how effective the thickness is and what the sleeping experience feels like. Memory foam is popular because it conforms to the contours of your body and provides excellent pressure relief. A 5-cm memory foam topper can feel as thick as a thicker topper made of a different material.

Latex mattress toppers are more resilient and respond more quickly to movement. They provide good support and are naturally breathable, which helps keep you cooler while you sleep. Latex also retains its shape longer, so the topper will last for years without sagging.

Gel-infused foam combines the benefits of memory foam with improved temperature regulation. The gel helps dissipate heat, which is especially nice if you tend to get hot while sleeping. This material often feels slightly firmer than regular memory foam.

Natural materials like wool or cotton provide a softer, more traditional sleeping experience. They are breathable and regulate moisture well, but offer less targeted pressure relief than modern foam materials. To achieve the same level of softness, you often need a slightly thicker mattress topper.

What are the most common mistakes people make when choosing a mattress topper?

The biggest mistake is choosing a mattress topper that’s too thick, assuming that thicker is always better. A topper that’s 10 cm or thicker can completely negate the firmness of your hard mattress, causing you to lose the orthopedic benefits you specifically chose it for.

Another common mistake is choosing the wrong material for your sleeping habits. If you tend to get hot easily, a thick memory foam topper without cooling features isn’t ideal. If you move around a lot while sleeping, a topper that’s too soft can make you feel restless.

Many people also forget to take their fitted sheets into account. A thick mattress topper means you’ll need deeper fitted sheets. Always measure the total height of the mattress plus the topper to make sure your bedding still fits.

Finally, people often underestimate the importance of a trial period. What feels comfortable in the store may feel different after a few nights. Always choose a mattress topper that you can try out for a few weeks.

Key points for choosing the perfect mattress topper

When choosing the perfect mattress topper, it’s all about finding the right balance between comfort and support. Start with a thickness of 5–7 centimeters as a general guideline, unless you have very specific needs. Pay close attention to the material and choose something that suits your sleeping style and temperature preferences.

Don’t forget to consider practical matters such as fitted sheets and maintenance. A good mattress topper is an investment in your sleep comfort that will last for years, so take your time to make the right choice.

Which bed size suits your height?

Top service!

About four years ago, I bought a beautiful bed at Broring, Gelderlandplein. Stephan helped me.
I lived nearby.
Now that I've moved in with my partner and live in Bloemendaal, I was having problems with the bed's controls.
My boyfriend contacted Broring about this many times by phone and email. When that didn't work, Stephan came by to fix it!
We thought that was great service because I no longer live in Buitenveldert, so I'm not next door!
I was also helped in the store by a somewhat older person, blond/gray hair, glasses, who was always very friendly!
The quality of the items, including sheets, towels, etc. in the store is also very good.
