A king-size bed is larger than a queen-size bed. A standard king-size bed measures 180 x 200 cm, while a queen-size bed measures 160 x 200 cm. This means that a king-size bed is 20 cm wider. This extra space makes a significant difference to your sleeping comfort, especially if you sleep with a partner or like to have plenty of space when sleeping.

What are the exact dimensions of king-size and queen-size beds?

The standard size for a king-size bed in the Netherlands is 180 x 200 centimeters. A queen-size bed, on the other hand, measures 160 x 200 centimeters. Both beds are the same length, but the king-size bed is 20 centimeters wider.

In Europe, we use different standards than in America. American king-size beds are much larger: 193 x 203 cm (76 x 80 inches). An American queen-size bed measures 153 x 203 cm (60 x 80 inches). These American sizes are less common in the Netherlands because of the larger space they require.

There are also variations within European standards. Some manufacturers offer king-size beds measuring 200 x 200 cm for people who prefer a square bed. For extra-tall people, extended versions measuring 180 x 210 cm or 180 x 220 cm are available.

Bed size  Dutch dimensions   US measurements
Queensize  160 x 200 cm 153 x 203 cm
Kingsize 180 x 200 cm 193 x 203 cm

How much space do you need for a king-size bed in your bedroom?

For a king-size bed, you need a bedroom measuring at least 3.5 x 3.5 meters to be able to move around comfortably. This gives you enough space to walk around the bed and room for other furniture such as a wardrobe.

Allow at least 60 centimeters of walking space on both sides of the bed. At the foot of the bed, you need at least 80 centimeters to make the bed and walk around it. This means that your bedroom must be at least 300 centimeters wide and 280 centimeters deep.

Do you have a smaller bedroom? Then you can make smart choices. Place the bed against a wall if you sleep alone, or choose a bed with storage space to save closet space. Sliding doors instead of hinged doors also save space.

Don't forget to take the height of your ceiling into account when choosing a box spring. These are often higher than traditional beds with slatted bases.

Which bed size best suits your sleeping situation?

The choice between king size and queen size depends on your personal sleeping habits and living situation. If you sleep alone but like a lot of space, a queen size bed offers sufficient comfort without dominating your bedroom.

For couples, a king-size bed is ideal if one of you is a restless sleeper or moves around a lot. The extra 20 centimeters of width ensures that you are less bothered by each other's movements. Are you taller than 1.85 meters? Then the extra width of a king-size bed is also beneficial for your sleeping position.

Queen-size beds are perfect for smaller bedrooms or if you are on a budget. The bedding is cheaper and you have more space for other furniture. For most couples, a queen-size bed offers enough space for comfortable sleeping.

Do you have physical complaints such as back pain? Then a larger bed can help because you have more space to find a comfortable sleeping position. However, the choice of mattress and support is more important than size alone.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of each bed size?

A king-size bed offers maximum sleeping comfort and space for two people. You are less bothered by your partner and can move freely while sleeping. It looks luxurious and gives your bedroom a hotel-like appearance.

The disadvantages of king size are the higher costs for bedding and the space required. Duvet covers and fitted sheets cost more, and your bedroom must be large enough. Moving a king size mattress can also be more difficult due to narrow stairs or doors.

Queen-size beds are more practical for most living situations. The bedding is more affordable and easier to find. You need less space and can furnish your bedroom in a more versatile way. For many couples, it offers sufficient comfort.

The disadvantage of queen size is the more limited space, especially if one of you is tall or moves around a lot while sleeping. For people who are used to a lot of space, it can feel cramped.

Aspect Queensize Kingsize
Space per person 80 cm wide 90 cm wide
Bedding costs Bearing Higher
Required bedroom   3 x 3.5 meters 3.5 x 3.5 meters
Suitable for Couples, smaller spaces   Luxurious comfort, spacious rooms

The choice between king size and queen size ultimately depends on your personal preferences, available space, and budget. Both sizes can provide excellent sleeping comfort if you choose the right mattress and the right support. Top service!

About four years ago, I bought a beautiful bed at Broring, Gelderlandplein. Stephan helped me.
I lived nearby.
Now that I've moved in with my partner and live in Bloemendaal, I was having problems with the bed's controls.
My boyfriend contacted Broring about this many times by phone and email. When that didn't work, Stephan came by to fix it!
We thought that was great service because I no longer live in Buitenveldert, so I'm not next door!
I was also helped in the store by a somewhat older person, blond/gray hair, glasses, who was always very friendly!
The quality of the items, including sheets, towels, etc. in the store is also very good.
