Which bed size suits your height?
The right bed size depends on your height, but also on your sleeping habits and the size of your bedroom. As a rule of thumb, choose a bed that is 15 to 20 centimeters longer than your height. As for width, it depends on whether you sleep alone or with a partner, and how much room you need to move around while sleeping. Which bed size is right for your height?
Why is choosing the right bed size so important for your sleep comfort?
A bed that’s the wrong size disrupts your sleep more than you might think. Your body needs enough space to fully relax and lie in a natural position.
If your bed is too short, you automatically pull your legs up or lie at an angle. This puts strain on your muscles and joints. Your spine isn’t in the correct position, which can lead to neck and back pain. Your blood circulation is also affected when you’re forced to lie in an unnatural position.
A bed that’s too narrow has similar consequences. You might roll off the bed, or you and your partner might be lying too close together. This leads to restless sleep because you wake each other up with every movement. Good beds therefore offer not only comfort but also proper body support in a bed that fits your size.
A bed that’s too big can also be a problem. In a bed that’s much too wide, you might feel unsafe or lost. Plus, it takes more energy to warm up the bed, which can be especially unpleasant in the winter. With a Freshbed, that problem is a thing of the past.
How do you calculate the perfect bed length for your body?
The formula for calculating the ideal bed length is simple: take your height and add 15 to 20 centimeters. Are you 1.80 meters tall? Then you’ll need a bed that’s at least 1.95 to 2.00 meters long.
You need those extra inches because you stretch out while you sleep and your feet need room. You also often stretch your arms above your head, which makes you temporarily “taller” in bed.
For people taller than 6 feet, a 7-foot bed is often recommended. This provides enough room to move around without feeling cramped. Some manufacturers even make custom beds for extra-tall people.
Note: Measure your height in the evening. Due to gravity, you’ll be slightly shorter than in the morning, which provides a more realistic starting point for your calculation.
What standard bed sizes are available in the Netherlands?
In the Netherlands, you'll find a variety of standard bed sizes, ranging from single to king-size. Here is an overview of the most common sizes:
| Bed type | Dimensions (W x L) | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|
| Single bed | 90 x 200 cm | Children and teenagers |
| Queen-size bed | 120 x 200 cm | Adults who sleep alone |
| Double bed | 140 x 200 cm | Couples in smaller bedrooms |
| Queen size | 160 x 200 cm | Couples with average space requirements |
| King size | 180 x 200 cm | Couples who want plenty of space |
| Super king size | 200 x 200 cm | Spacious, luxurious bedrooms |
Dutch bed sizes sometimes differ from international standards. For example, American king-size beds measure 193 x 203 cm, while we use 180 x 200 cm. With a luxury bed or box spring, you can often choose from different lengths, such as 210 or 220 cm.
What is the difference between a 180×200 and a 200×200 bed?
The difference between these two popular king-size bed sizes lies in the width: an extra 20 centimeters of space per person. That may not seem like much, but it makes a big difference in your sleeping comfort.
An 180×200 cm bed gives each person 90 centimeters of width—the same as a single bed. This is sufficient for most couples, especially if you don’t move around much while sleeping. It also fits better in standard Dutch bedrooms.
A 200×200 bed gives each person 100 centimeters of space, which provides noticeably more room to move around. This is ideal if one of you moves around a lot while sleeping, or if you’re both on the larger side. This size is also more comfortable for people who like to sleep stretched out.
The downside of a 200×200 bed is the space it requires. Your bedroom needs to be at least 3 by 3 meters to allow for comfortable movement around the bed. Bedding and mattresses are also more expensive in this size.
How do you choose the right bed width for one or two people?
For single people, here’s the rule: choose a bed that’s at least 120 centimeters wide if you want enough space. A 90-centimeter bed is often too narrow for adults who want to sleep comfortably.
For couples, the ideal width depends on several factors. Are you both slim and do you move around very little while sleeping? If so, a 140-centimeter bed may be sufficient. For most couples, however, a 160- or 180-centimeter bed is more comfortable.
Pay attention to your sleeping habits. Does one of you move around a lot, or does anyone tend to roll toward the middle of the bed? If so, an extra-wide bed is recommended. A wider bed can also be helpful if one of you is much taller or heavier than the other.
Some couples deliberately choose to use two separate mattresses on a single bed frame. This prevents your partner from waking you up when they move, even though you’re both lying in the same bed.
Which bed size is best for your bedroom?
Measure your bedroom first before choosing a bed. You’ll need at least 60 centimeters of walking space around the bed, on both sides. For wardrobes and other furniture, we usually allow 80 to 100 centimeters.
A bed measuring up to 160 x 200 centimeters will fit comfortably in a 3 x 3-meter bedroom. For a 180 x 200-centimeter bed, you’ll need a space of at least 3.5 x 3.5 meters. A 200 x 200-centimeter bed requires a 4 x 4-meter bedroom.
Also consider access to your bedroom. Will the bed fit through the door, down the stairs, and down the hallway? A box spring often consists of separate parts that you assemble on site, but a fixed bed frame has to be brought in all at once.
Don’t place the bed directly under a window or against a radiator. This can cause drafts or overheating. A corner of the room often works well, as long as both partners can get in and out of bed easily.

Top service!
About four years ago, I bought a beautiful bed at Broring, Gelderlandplein. Stephan helped me.
I lived nearby.
Now that I've moved in with my partner and live in Bloemendaal, I was having problems with the bed's controls.
My boyfriend contacted Broring about this many times by phone and email. When that didn't work, Stephan came by to fix it!
We thought that was great service because I no longer live in Buitenveldert, so I'm not next door!
I was also helped in the store by a somewhat older person, blond/gray hair, glasses, who was always very friendly!
The quality of the items, including sheets, towels, etc. in the store is also very good.
