Mattress toppers are available in various thicknesses, ranging from thin 2–3 cm models to thick 10–12 cm options. The most common thicknesses are 3 cm, 5 cm, 7 cm, and 10 cm. Each thickness offers specific benefits: thin toppers for minor adjustments and thick toppers for greater comfort and support. Your choice depends on your current mattress, sleeping habits, and desired comfort level.

What are the standard thicknesses for mattress toppers?

Mattress toppers are available in a wide range of thicknesses, each designed to meet specific needs. Standard thicknesses range from 2 cm to 12 cm, with certain sizes being more popular than others.

The thinnest toppers start at 2–3 cm and are perfect for making small adjustments to your existing mattress. These models add a layer of comfort without drastically altering the support. They’re ideal if your mattress is still in good condition but needs to feel just a little softer.

Medium-thick mattress toppers (5–7 cm) offer a good balance between comfort and functionality. These mattress topper options are popular because they make a noticeable difference without altering your sleeping position. They can make a mattress that’s too firm feel pleasantly softer.

Thick toppers measuring 8–12 cm will completely transform your sleeping experience. These models offer maximum comfort and can even breathe new life into an old or uncomfortable mattress. They feel just like a new mattress. If your mattress has sagged or is worn out, we always recommend seeking advice from Bröring first

What thickness of mattress topper do you need for extra comfort?

For extra comfort, choose a mattress topper that is at least 5 cm thick. This thickness provides enough material to relieve pressure points and noticeably improve your sleep comfort. Thicker mattress toppers, ranging from 7 to 10 cm, offer even more luxurious comfort and support.

Your sleeping position plays an important role in your choice. Do you sleep on your side? If so, you’ll benefit from a thicker mattress topper that provides better support for your hips and shoulders. For those who sleep on their stomachs or backs, a moderately thick mattress topper (5–7 cm) is usually sufficient.

Your current mattress also determines what thickness you need. Is your mattress still relatively new but just a little too firm? Then a 5-cm mattress topper will suffice. Do you have an old mattress that’s seen better days? Then go for a thick mattress topper of 8 cm or more to ensure optimal comfort.

Also consider the material of the mattress topper. Memory foam toppers feel thicker than latex toppers of the same height. Natural materials like latex and wool offer excellent temperature regulation, which is important for a good night’s sleep.

What is the difference between thin and thick mattress toppers?

Thin mattress toppers (2–5 cm) are subtle and affordable, while thick mattress toppers (7–12 cm) offer a dramatic improvement in comfort. The main difference lies in the level of support and comfort they provide.

Thin mattress toppers are perfect for minor adjustments. They subtly alter the feel of your mattress and are ideal for temperature regulation or smoothing out minor unevenness. They’re also practical because they’re easy to handle and take up less storage space.

Thick toppers, on the other hand, can completely transform a mattress. They provide better pressure relief, better contouring to your body, and can even mask structural flaws in your mattress. The downside is that they are more expensive and require more maintenance.

There are clear differences in price. Thin mattress toppers are more affordable and often cost half as much as thick ones. Thick mattress toppers are a bigger investment but can extend the life of an old mattress by years.

The choice between thin and thick also depends on how long you plan to use the mattress topper. Thin mattress toppers are ideal for temporary solutions or if you’re not sure what you prefer. Thick mattress toppers are better for long-term use and if you really want to improve your sleep comfort.

How do you choose the perfect mattress topper thickness for your needs?

Start by assessing your current mattress. Is it still in good condition but just a little too firm? Then a 5–7 cm mattress topper is ideal. Has your mattress seen better days? Then opt for a thick mattress topper of 8 cm or more.

Your sleeping habits also provide important clues. Do you often wake up because of pressure points, or do you toss and turn? If so, a thicker mattress topper (7–10 cm) might be the solution. Do you already sleep reasonably well but want just a little more comfort? In that case, a 3–5 cm mattress topper will suffice.

Also consider practical considerations. Thick mattress toppers require special fitted sheets and can raise the height of your bed. Check whether your current bedding still fits or if you’ll need to buy new sheets.

Specific issues call for targeted solutions. Do you have back pain? Then look for a mattress topper that provides adequate support—usually 7 cm or thicker. Do you tend to get hot while sleeping? Then a thin mattress topper made from a natural material like latex could be perfect for temperature regulation.

Which bed size suits your height?

Top service!

About four years ago, I bought a beautiful bed at Broring, Gelderlandplein. Stephan helped me.
I lived nearby.
Now that I've moved in with my partner and live in Bloemendaal, I was having problems with the bed's controls.
My boyfriend contacted Broring about this many times by phone and email. When that didn't work, Stephan came by to fix it!
We thought that was great service because I no longer live in Buitenveldert, so I'm not next door!
I was also helped in the store by a somewhat older person, blond/gray hair, glasses, who was always very friendly!
The quality of the items, including sheets, towels, etc. in the store is also very good.
