The best mattress topper for people who tend to get hot while sleeping is a latex or gel-infused topper no more than 5 centimeters thick, made from natural materials with an open-cell structure. These toppers promote airflow, regulate moisture, and prevent heat buildup during the night. Combine this with breathable bedding for optimal sleep comfort.

What makes a mattress topper suitable for people who sleep hot?

A cooling mattress topper stands out thanks to specific features that promote heat dissipation. Breathable materials with an open-cell structure ensure better airflow, while moisture-wicking properties help sweat evaporate quickly.

Temperature regulation depends on the material composition. Natural fibers such as latex and bamboo have naturally cooling properties because they do not retain heat. These materials create a microclimate that helps stabilize your body temperature.

Ventilation plays an important role in the cooling effect. Mattresses with channels, perforations, or a naturally porous structure allow air to circulate more effectively. This prevents heat from building up between your body and the mattress.

What materials are best for cooling mattress toppers?

Latex mattress toppers are the top choice for people who tend to get hot while sleeping, thanks to their natural cooling properties. The material has an open-cell structure that provides excellent ventilation and quickly wicks away moisture. Latex conforms to your body without trapping heat.

Gel-infused memory foam combines comfort with cooling. The gel particles absorb body heat and draw it away from your body. This material provides good pressure relief but may be less durable than natural alternatives.

Material Cooling effect Advantages Cons
Latex Excellent Natural, sustainable, good ventilation Higher purchase price
Gel-infused foam Good Pressure relief, cooling gel May become less effective over time
Bamboo fibers Good Naturally antibacterial, moisture-wicking Less firm than latex
Cotton Fair Natural, breathable, affordable Retains more moisture

Bamboo fibers offer natural antibacterial properties and good moisture regulation. They feel soft and are eco-friendly, but provide less structural support than latex.

How do you choose the right thickness for your cooling mattress topper?

For people who tend to get hot while sleeping, a mattress topper that is 3 to 5 centimeters thick is ideal. This thickness provides sufficient comfort without restricting airflow. Thicker mattress toppers can trap heat and reduce the cooling effect.

Thickness directly affects temperature regulation. Thin toppers (2–3 cm) allow more air to circulate but provide less pressure relief. Toppers thicker than 7 cm can feel too warm because they create more insulation.

Your current mattress also plays a role. If you have a firm mattress, you may need a slightly thicker topper for comfort, but be sure to choose materials that are extra breathable. Side sleepers often need more thickness than back or stomach sleepers to ensure proper pressure relief.

Test the combination of your mattress and topper. A good cooling topper should conform to the contours of your body without sinking in too deeply, which would restrict airflow.

Besides a good mattress topper, what other tips can help prevent overheating while sleeping?

Breathable bedding enhances the cooling effect of your mattress topper. Choose natural materials like linen, bamboo, or percale cotton, which wick away moisture and allow air to circulate. Avoid synthetic fabrics that trap heat.

Make sure your bedroom is well-ventilated. Keep the windows open to let in fresh air, use a fan to create airflow, or invest in an air conditioner. The ideal bedroom temperature is between 16 and 19 degrees Celsius.

Your sleepwear makes a difference. Wear light, breathable pajamas or sleep without clothes. Avoid thick fabrics that trap heat. Choose loose-fitting clothing that allows air to circulate.

Other factors that help:

  • Use a cooling pillow made of latex or gel
  • Avoid heavy comforters; opt for thin blankets
  • Place a glass of cold water next to your bed
  • Take a cool shower before bed
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine before bedtime

What should you look for when buying a mattress topper for people who tend to get hot?

Look for certifications that guarantee quality and safety. OEKO-TEX certification ensures that the material is free of harmful substances. For latex, look for GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) certification.

Be sure to take care of your mattress topper. Cooling mattress toppers often require a removable, washable cover. Check to see if the topper can be aired out regularly and if it fits your existing fitted sheet.

The lifespan varies depending on the material. Latex toppers last 8–12 years, while gel-infused foam toppers last 3–5 years. Invest in quality for long-lasting cooling comfort.

Prices range from €150 for basic gel-foam toppers to €800 for premium latex toppers. With cooling toppers, quality pays off, as cheaper alternatives often lose their cooling properties quickly.

Which bed size suits your height?

Top service!

About four years ago, I bought a beautiful bed at Broring, Gelderlandplein. Stephan helped me.
I lived nearby.
Now that I've moved in with my partner and live in Bloemendaal, I was having problems with the bed's controls.
My boyfriend contacted Broring about this many times by phone and email. When that didn't work, Stephan came by to fix it!
We thought that was great service because I no longer live in Buitenveldert, so I'm not next door!
I was also helped in the store by a somewhat older person, blond/gray hair, glasses, who was always very friendly!
The quality of the items, including sheets, towels, etc. in the store is also very good.
