A high bed offers several practical benefits for your daily comfort and sleep quality. The main pluses include easier entry and exit, better airflow around your mattress, extra storage space under the bed and ergonomic benefits for your back and joints. A luxury bed at the right height can also make your bedroom appear visually larger and provides a more elegant look.

What are the main advantages of a high bed?

A high bed brings several benefits that improve your daily comfort. Getting in and out more easily is at the top of the list, especially if you are getting older or have joint problems.

Better airflow under a higher bed creates a healthier sleeping environment. Your mattress can breathe better, which prevents moisture and heat buildup. This helps against dust mites and keeps your bed fresher.

A high bed also creates more storage space under your bed. You can store seasonal clothes, extra bedding or other items here. This is especially useful in smaller bedrooms where every square foot counts.

Don't underestimate the visual effect. A high bed draws the eye upward and makes your bedroom appear larger. It gives a more luxurious, hotel-like look to your sleeping space.

Why is a high bed better for your back and joints?

The ergonomic benefits of a high bed are especially noticeable when getting up and going to bed. You don't have to squat as deeply, which reduces pressure on your knees and lower back.

With a bed at the correct height, you place your feet flat on the floor as you sit. This creates a natural angle in your knees of about 90 degrees. From this position, you get up more easily without straining your back.

For people with joint problems, arthritis or limited mobility, these benefits make a big difference. The daily ritual of going to bed becomes less stressful for your body. Getting up at night to visit the toilet also goes more smoothly.

A box spring or other high-profile bed system can help prevent back pain caused by improper movements when getting in and out of bed.

How much storage space do you get under a high bed?

Storage space under a high bed varies between 30 and 50 inches in height, depending on your choice of bed. This provides space for various items you don't need on a daily basis.

You can perfectly store seasonal clothing, such as winter coats in the summer or swimwear in the winter. Extra quilts, pillows and sheets also find their place here. Suitcases, sports equipment or even books fit well underneath.

For smaller bedrooms, this extra storage space is golden. No need to buy a separate closet or storage furniture. Use storage boxes or bags to keep your things neatly organized.

Be sure to keep the space accessible. Place items you need more often at the front, and store seasonal items more toward the back.

What bed height best suits your height?

You determine the ideal bed height by sitting on the edge of your bed with your feet flat on the floor. Your upper legs should then be parallel to the floor, with your knees at an angle of about 90 degrees.

For most people, the optimal bed height is between 50 and 65 centimeters from the floor to the top of your mattress. Taller people often need a slightly higher bed, while smaller people are better off with a lower bed.

Test different heights before you buy. Sit on different beds and pay attention to how easily you get up. Your feet should touch the ground without your toes having to reach or your legs dangling.

With a custom-made bed, you can adjust the height exactly to your build. This is especially interesting if you are much taller or smaller than average, or if you have specific physical limitations.

Are there any disadvantages to a high bed that you should consider?

A high bed also has some disadvantages that you should think about beforehand. Children and pets have more difficulty getting in and out on their own.

If you are used to a low bed, a high bed requires an adjustment period. The first few nights you may feel uncomfortable or even experience some vertigo. This usually gets used to within a week.

People with balance problems or dizziness should take extra care. The risk of falling is greater with a high bed. If so, consider a medium-height bed or place a step beside your bed.

A high bed also requires more space visually. In a bedroom with low ceilings, it can feel cramped. Therefore, measure carefully before choosing an extra-high bed.

The cost is often higher than for standard beds. A king-size bed in a higher-end model costs more than a standard model. Even a single-size mattress is more expensive in a high-rise bed system.

Top service!

About four years ago, I bought a beautiful bed at Broring, Gelderlandplein. Stephan helped me.
I lived nearby.
Now that I've moved in with my partner and live in Bloemendaal, I was having problems with the bed's controls.
My boyfriend contacted Broring about this many times by phone and email. When that didn't work, Stephan came by to fix it!
We thought that was great service because I no longer live in Buitenveldert, so I'm not next door!
I was also helped in the store by a somewhat older person, blond/gray hair, glasses, who was always very friendly!
The quality of the items, including sheets, towels, etc. in the store is also very good.
