A mattress topper that shifts while you sleep can lead to uncomfortable nights and disrupt your sleep quality. You can solve this problem by using the right securing methods, such as fitted sheets, non-slip mats, or topper grippers. Choosing the right size and material will also help keep your topper securely in place on the mattress.

Why does your mattress topper shift while you sleep?

Your mattress topper shifts because there isn't enough friction between the topper and the mattress surface. This happens especially with smooth mattress covers, incorrect dimensions, or different materials that don't fit together properly.

The main causes of a shifting top plate are:

  • Smooth surfaces – Satin or polyester mattress covers offer little traction
  • Wrong size – A mattress topper that is too small or too large will not stay in place
  • Movements during sleep – Tossing and turning causes shifting
  • Differences in materials – Certain combinations of mattress and topper tend to slip more easily

The thickness of your mattress topper also matters. Thicker toppers are more likely to shift because they sit higher and have more room to move. Thinner toppers stay in place better, but can still slide off if they aren’t secured properly.

What are the best ways to secure your mattress topper?

Fitted sheets that fit over both the mattress topper and the mattress offer the most effective solution. They keep your mattress topper securely in place on the mattress without any complicated setup.

The best mounting methods are:

Method Effectiveness   Ease of use   Cost
Fitted sheets   Very high Simple Average.
Non-slip mats High Easy Low
Velcro strips On average Fair Low
Topper grippers High Simple On average

Place anti-slip mats between the mattress and the topper. These rubber or silicone mats provide extra grip. Attach Velcro strips to the corners of your topper and mattress, but this requires more effort when making your bed.

Topper grippers are elastic straps with clips that go under your mattress and hold your topper in place. This method works well with mattresses of various depths.

How do you choose the right size mattress topper for your mattress?

Measure your mattress carefully and choose a mattress topper with the exact same dimensions. A topper that fits perfectly has less room to shift and stays in place while you sleep.

Follow these steps to find the right size:

  1. Measure the length and width of your mattress with a measuring tape
  2. Check the thickness of your mattress to find the right fitted sheet size
  3. Choose a mattress topper that matches these dimensions exactly
  4. Avoid mattress toppers that are more than 2 centimeters different from your mattress dimensions

A topper that’s too small leaves parts of your mattress exposed and easily slides toward the center. A topper that’s too large hangs over the edges and forms creases that feel uncomfortable.

Also consider the thickness of your mattress topper in combination with your fitted sheet. Your fitted sheet should be deep enough to fit over both the mattress and the topper. Allow for about 5–7 centimeters of extra depth for a standard mattress topper.

What are the best materials for a stable mattress topper?

Memory foam and latex mattress toppers offer the best stability because these materials provide better grip on the mattress surface. These materials conform to the shape of your mattress and stay in place more effectively.

Different materials and their properties:

  • Memory foam – Adheres firmly to the mattress surface through heat and pressure
  • Latex – Natural grip and flexibility
  • Polyester filling – Smooth surface, more likely to shift
  • Down and feathers – Lightweight material that moves easily

The cover of your mattress topper also affects its stability. Cotton covers provide more grip than smooth synthetic materials. A woven texture in the cover creates extra friction against your mattress.

Never pair a smooth mattress topper with a smooth mattress cover. This combination causes the topper to slide around. If you have a smooth mattress, choose a topper with a textured underside, or always use an anti-slip mat.

For best results, combine the right material with the appropriate fastening method. This way, you can enjoy stable sleeping comfort without the topper shifting.

Which bed size suits your height?

Top service!

About four years ago, I bought a beautiful bed at Broring, Gelderlandplein. Stephan helped me.
I lived nearby.
Now that I've moved in with my partner and live in Bloemendaal, I was having problems with the bed's controls.
My boyfriend contacted Broring about this many times by phone and email. When that didn't work, Stephan came by to fix it!
We thought that was great service because I no longer live in Buitenveldert, so I'm not next door!
I was also helped in the store by a somewhat older person, blond/gray hair, glasses, who was always very friendly!
The quality of the items, including sheets, towels, etc. in the store is also very good.
