To prevent partners from waking each other up in bed, choose a mattress that minimizes motion transfer, regulate different sleeping temperatures with separate bedding or temperature-controlled zones, and adapt your sleeping environment to accommodate different sleep rhythms. The right mattress and smart adjustments to your bedroom will ensure that both of you can sleep undisturbed, regardless of each other’s movements or habits.

Why do partners wake each other up in bed?

Partners disrupt each other’s sleep for four main reasons: motion transfer through the mattress, different sleep rhythms, varying body temperatures, and noises such as snoring or tossing and turning. These disruptions occur mainly during the lighter stages of sleep.

Movement is the biggest disturbance. When your partner turns over or gets up, the other person feels it through vibrations in the mattress. This problem is worse with older spring mattresses or cheap foam mattresses that transmit movement.

Temperature differences can also cause friction. One partner gets hot easily and kicks off the comforter, while the other needs more warmth. This constant tugging at the bedding disrupts both partners’ sleep.

Different sleep schedules mean that one partner goes to bed while the other is still awake, or that one person gets up early. Turning on the light, walking around the bedroom, or taking a shower can wake the sleeping partner.

Which mattress is best at preventing motion transfer?

Pocket spring mattresses are the best at preventing motion transfer, because each spring is individually encased in a pocket and moves independently. Memory foam and natural latex are also excellent choices for absorbing motion.

Pocket springs are so effective because the springs are not connected to one another. When your partner moves, only the springs beneath that person respond. The rest of the bed remains stable. A 180×200 cm bed with pocket springs offers plenty of space and comfort for two people.

Memory foam conforms to the shape of your body and fully absorbs movement. The material reacts slowly to changes in pressure, so sudden movements are not transmitted. Natural latex combines this property with better ventilation.

For smaller bedrooms, a 140×200 or 160×200 box spring is a good option. A 180×200 box spring gives you the most room to move around without disturbing each other. The combination of pocket springs in both the mattress and the box spring doubles the motion isolation.

How do you adjust the temperature in one bed to suit different preferences?

You can manage temperature differences by using separate bedding, choosing a mattress with different temperature zones, or adjusting the bedroom temperature to your preference. That way, each of you can set your own temperature without disturbing the other.

Separate comforters are the simplest solution. Choose different warmth levels: a thin comforter for the partner who gets hot easily, and a warmer comforter for the one who needs more warmth. This prevents one person from pulling the bedding away.

Modern mattresses offer zone-specific temperature control. These mattresses feature different materials or ventilation on each side. One side may have a cooling effect thanks to gel-infused foam, while the other side retains more heat.

Set the bedroom temperature to 16–18 degrees Celsius. This is ideal for most people. Place a fan on the side of the bed where your partner feels warm, and use breathable bedding made from natural materials such as cotton or bamboo.

What can you do about different sleep schedules?

Adapt your bedroom setup to accommodate different sleep schedules by using blackout curtains, laying out your clothes outside the bedroom, and installing a nightlight with a dimmer. Good sleep hygiene also helps you fall asleep faster.

Lay out your clothes for the next day in another room. That way, you won’t have to rummage through closets in the morning, and you won’t wake your partner. Use your phone as an alarm clock with the vibration setting under your pillow instead of the sound.

Install blackout curtains or blinds that you can operate silently. This is helpful when one partner goes to bed early while there’s still light coming in from outside, or when someone gets up early while it’s still dark.

Create a buffer zone in your sleep routines. Go to the bedroom together, even if one of you isn’t ready to sleep right away. Read a book or use a tablet with a blue light filter. This minimizes the disruption when the last person goes to bed.

The best sleep solutions for a restful night's sleep

The perfect combination for a good night’s sleep consists of a high-quality pocket spring mattress, separate bedding, a well-appointed bedroom, and mutual understanding of each other’s sleeping habits. These elements work together to ensure optimal rest.

Start with the right mattress. A 180×200 box spring with pocket springs provides the best foundation. Add separate duvets with different warmth ratings. Make sure there’s enough space on both sides of the bed so you can get up without disturbing your partner.

Invest in blackout curtains, a quiet fan, and soft lighting. Keep the bedroom temperature between 16 and 18 degrees and ensure proper ventilation. This environment supports natural sleep rhythms and minimizes disruptions.

Communication is still important. Talk about your sleep habits and work together to find solutions. Some changes take time to get used to, but investing in better sleep is always worth it.

Top service!

About four years ago, I bought a beautiful bed at Broring, Gelderlandplein. Stephan helped me.
I lived nearby.
Now that I've moved in with my partner and live in Bloemendaal, I was having problems with the bed's controls.
My boyfriend contacted Broring about this many times by phone and email. When that didn't work, Stephan came by to fix it!
We thought that was great service because I no longer live in Buitenveldert, so I'm not next door!
I was also helped in the store by a somewhat older person, blond/gray hair, glasses, who was always very friendly!
The quality of the items, including sheets, towels, etc. in the store is also very good.
