Comparing different mattress brands isn’t that difficult in itself if you know a little bit about the subject, but when you compare two brands like VI Spring and Schramm, it makes the specialist’s job very easy in every respect. These are two brands that are truly like apples and oranges when compared. Of course, both are sleep furniture designed to ensure the user is properly supported and gets a good night’s sleep in the best possible environment, but VI Spring and Schramm have managed to achieve a uniquely comfortable end result through two very different philosophies.

to combine two contrasting philosophies and achieve a unique and comfortable end result.

VI Spring: Handcrafted English Mattresses

Starting with the older of the two, VI Spring is a quintessentially English brand and is manufactured in a quintessentially English manner. The basic concept consists of a spring core mattress and a spring-loaded box. So far, nothing out of the ordinary—this description applies to practically all beds in the box spring category. VI Spring manufactures the springs in-house from chrome-vanadium steel. These are shaped and immediately placed into cotton pockets. No further process to align the atoms takes place, ensuring the springs retain their shape. This is also unnecessary given the philosophy behind building a VI Spring bed. VI Spring typically uses only one wire gauge for the entire spring assembly across the length and width of the bed. Of course, these mattresses are available in different firmness levels: soft, medium, and firm.

The springs in a VI Spring bed are also nested within one another, a design often referred to as a honeycomb pattern. As a result, the springs have only limited individual springiness but function more as a group. The underlying principle of a VI Spring bed is therefore that the cumulative layering of materials—including layers of springs as well as layers of wool, cotton, silk, and similar materials—will provide the proper support. The cover of a VI Spring mattress is made of damask fabric that does not stretch in either the length or width. As a result, such a bed does not necessarily meet all physiological support requirements for everyone. This depends entirely on the body type of the person in question. Good advice from a specialist is therefore extremely important, and comparing it with other types of bed construction is often a good idea for a customer to make an informed choice.

Schramm: technically engineered box springs with individual springs

As described earlier, Schramm is also a box spring, but instead of creating support by stacking numerous materials on top of one another, Schramm relies on a technically engineered mattress with springs that offer a highly responsive, individual springing action. Schramm’s springs are arranged in rows rather than being “nested,” giving them greater freedom of movement. The different layers in the mattresses are therefore not glued together, but merely connected by stitching. Schramm also uses different wire gauges in the mattress springs, and the support is incorporated into the design in a wave-like pattern, so to speak. This provides extra support for the pelvis and reduces pressure on the shoulders.

Schramm’s springs are “tempered,” a process of heating and cooling that aligns the atoms in the steel, giving it its dimensional stability and toughness—much like the steel in a sword, which is also tempered after forging. In addition to using thick layers of primarily wool, Schramm uses Talalay latex as its primary comfort layer. This is a homogeneous material with a very soft yet firm support made from 100% natural latex. To ensure that you can truly find the right mattress for everyone, Schramm offers 5 different firmness levels in its main mattress lines.

Conclusion: Which bed is the winner?

So is Schramm the winner in this comparison? The answer is “No”—just like VI Spring, for that matter. Whether a bed truly suits your needs in terms of comfort and support depends on personal factors that are discussed during a thorough consultation in the showroom.

Top service!

About four years ago, I bought a beautiful bed at Broring, Gelderlandplein. Stephan helped me.
I lived nearby.
Now that I've moved in with my partner and live in Bloemendaal, I was having problems with the bed's controls.
My boyfriend contacted Broring about this many times by phone and email. When that didn't work, Stephan came by to fix it!
We thought that was great service because I no longer live in Buitenveldert, so I'm not next door!
I was also helped in the store by a somewhat older person, blond/gray hair, glasses, who was always very friendly!
The quality of the items, including sheets, towels, etc. in the store is also very good.
